Points to Remember when Choosing a Research Topic
1. Timeliness
For me, this is the very important to consider when it comes to choosing a good research topic. Your topic must correspond to the needs of time (except if you are writing on historical research). But if you're having another kind of research method such as descriptive, or experimental, then you must choose a recent topic or issue.
2. Number of Sources of Data
It's hard to gather data if you don't have enough sources of data, especially primary data. Timeliness and interests will not be enough to consider in writing a research topic. If you're a graduating student who just want to comply a research, then the number of sources of data is important. Although, we have a lot of sources of data, such as the internet and library, there are times we have to gather data from the people themselves. Gathering data from the real people/sample population will make our research more reliable and valid.
3. Interest
Based on my experiences, it feels good to study and spend time on something we have interest to. Conducting a research/thesis/dissertation takes a lot of time and patience. It requires several months to finish a decent paper. So, why not conduct a study that you have your interest in?
4. Benefits
As researchers, we write for a purpose and such purpose must be for the advantage of more people. If you're in a college or university, we're aware that the benefits of writing a research is that it's one of the requirements for you to pass a subject. But, as you write your manuscript, you're already writing down the purposes of the study. I always have it in mind that there must be purposes in writing a research. Why do we write a research? For us to find out solutions and recommendations based on the results of the study.
5. Specific
Choose a specific issue from a specific topic. Studying a broad topic requires about a year or more to finish. The more specific your topic is, the less time you need to finish it. For example, if you're planning to study the psychosocial status of the learners regarding the shift from distance to face to face learning, you might want to choose a certain grade level of learners you want to focus. Larger population for your study really takes time. Therefore, you might want to just choose 1 grade level as the sample population.
I hope these pointers help you for the upcoming semester / school year!
What else do you consider when choosing a topic? Are you conducting a study? How long have you been doing it?
